Costumes for kids are often easy to make. They want to be the newest super-hero.
Sometimes it is just easier to buy the costume and get on with life for those kinds of requests.
However, as you kids reach their teen years they often still want to dress up, but now want something creative rather than another costume off the shelf.
Here are some ideas for no sew Haloween costumes.
First, remember that costumes do not have to be put together to last forever.
If a costume lasts for the night, that may be the only time it is ever worn. There are many things that can be done with duct tape, iron on fusible web and safety pins.
One year, one of my daughters wore a white tee shirt with a large yellow circle that had been cut from felt and ironed onto it using the fusible web.
Her younger brother tagged along in her regular school clothes, carried a joke book and told a corny joke at each house at which they stopped. Their costume was ham and eggs of course.
Another year my daughter decided that she would like to dress as a cup of Starbucks Coffee. For this costume, we took a white round plastic laundry hamper and cut about three inches off the bottom. The remaining hamper without the bottom then had a sleeve attached to cover the holes in the hamper. The sleeve was made of brown wrapping paper and attached with clear scotch tape.
The Starbucks logo was copied and pasted to a picture on a home computer to be printed out. The logo was cut from the paper and attached to the sleeve with glue. Cotton yarn made great suspenders to hold the cup in place.
A wrapping paper tube was wrapped in red cellophane and attached to the inverted bottom of the hamper which served as a lid for the coffee cup. This was attached to her head with more cotton yarn as a hat. The creative costume did not require any sewing and was a hit.
On other occasions, our children have even mixed holidays.
One year a child dressed in green sweats. Circles of felt were attached all over the body of the sweats and some battery operated Christmas light were worn as a necklace. In each hand he carried one of the lower branches from an artificial Christmas tree, because he was after all a Christmas tree.
Whatever Haloween costume you choose be sure to have fun during the holiday. If you chose to go from house to house to trick or treat or you chose to attend a costume party, the entire holiday should be about having fun.
